Four people died, including three children, when two buses collided near the corner of Ocean Parade and Scenic Highway in Smalltown yesterday.
The incident happened at 4pm, when a school bus returning to Kingfisher Primary School in Smalltown hit a National Coach Service bus en route from Sydney to Melbourne.
A Rural Ambulance spokesman said up to 20 people were injured, with five people in a critical condition.
An eyewitness said they heard a “huge bang” as the vehicles collided.
“We have been telling local councillors for years that they should do something about better traffic signals at that intersection,” he said.
“It is so dangerous.”
Kingfisher school Headmistress Caroline Primm said the accident had a “devastating effect” on the school community.
“The children had been looking forward to this trip for weeks,” she said.
“To have it end like this it is just too terrible.”
Police are investigating.
